(This guide is based on Windows 2000
behaviour so it might vary compared to Windows XP. However,
the overall process should be more or less the
same.)

1) Go to
the Control Panel and double left
click on the Network and Dial-up
Connections icon. In the resulting window
double left click on the Make New
Connection icon to launch the Network
Connection Wizard. In the Network
Connection Wizard window left click on the
Next > button to begin. |

2) In the
new window, select the Dial-up to the
Internet option and left click on the
Next > button. This will launch the
nternet Connection Wizard. In the
wizard select the I want to set up my Internet
connection manually, or I want to connect through a
local area network (LAN) option and left click
on the Next > button. |

3) In the
new Internet Connection Wizard window
select the I connect through a phone line and a
modem option and left click on the
Next > button. In the new window,
select the Serial Networking entry
from the drop down menu and left click on the
Next > button. |

4) In the
new window, de-select the Use area code and
dialing rules option and enter
123456 as the Telephone
number. Now left click on the
Advanced... button. In the resulting
Advanced Connection Properties menu
left click on the Addresses tab.
Select the IP address - Always use the
following: option and type in the following IP
address: 192.168.1.2 and left click on
the OK button. Now left click on the
Next > button in the
Internet Connection Wizard. |

5) In the
next Internet Connection Wizard leave
both the User name: and
Password: fields blank and left click
on the Next > button. You will get
a warning from the wizard about leaving these fields
blank - ignore it by left clicking on the
Yes button. |

6) In the
new wizard screen, enter Serial
Network in the Connect name:
text box and left click on the Next
> button. In the next window select the
No option for setting up a mail
account and left click on the Next
> button to continue again. To finish the
Internet Connection wizard left click
on the Finish button which you should
now see. |

7) Return
to the Network and Dial-up Connections
and right click on the new Serial
Network icon and select the
Properties option. In the resulting
Serial Network Properties window left
click on the Networking tab and tick
the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft
Networks option box. Now left click on the
OK button to finish. |
