This process is split into two parts. The first is setting up a new modem driver for connecting to the Acorn. The second is setting up a new Dial-Up Network Connection.

(This guide is based on Windows 98 (Second Edition) behaviour, so it might vary from other versions of Windows 95/98. However, the overall process should be more or less the same.)


Setting Up the Modem:

1) On the PC desktop double click on the My Computer icon, and in the resulting window double click on Control Panel.

Adding a new modem screenshot link 2) In Control Panel double click on the Modems icon. In the resulting window click on Add.

Don't Use Wizard Screenshot Link 3) In the resulting window, Install New Modem, tick the box marked: Don't Run the Hardware Installation Wizard.

Click on the Next > button.


Don't detect modem screenshot link 4) In the resulting window, tick the box marked: Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list.

Click on the Next > button


9600 bps modem screenshot link 5) In the resulting window you should be presented with two menus: Manufacturer and Models.

In the Manufacturer menu, highlight (Standard Modem Types), and in the Models menu highlight Standard 9600bps Modem.

Click on the Next > button. (NB. Even though the driver is for a 9600 bps modem, the actual connection rate will be the fastest rate allowable on both computers).


Selecting the COM Port Screenshot Link 6) In the resulting window you should be presented with a list of your PC's Comms and Printer ports. Select which ever Comm (Serial) port you will be using.

Click on the Next > button.


Successfull Setup Screenshot Link 7) You should now be presented with a window, confirming the successful setup of the modem.

Click on the Finish button to complete the process.



Setting Up the Dial-Up Networking Connection:

1) On the PC desktop double click on the My Computer icon.

Make a New Connection Screenshot Link 2) Double click on the Dial-Up Networking icon to get the Dial-Up Networking window.

Double click on the Make New Connection icon.


Naming the Connection Screenshot Link 3) In the resulting window, under the Type a name for the computing you are using label, type a name for the connection. I suggest Serial Network.

In the Select a device drop down menu, select the Standard 9600bps Modem.

Click on the Next > button.


Phone Number Screenshot Link 4) In the resulting window, under the Telephone Number label, type in 123456.

Click on the Next > button.


Completed DUC Screenshot Link 5) You should now be presented with a window, confirming the successful setup of the Dial-Up Connection.

Click on the Finish button to complete the process.


6) We now need to set up the network settings for the Dial-Up Connection.Return to the Dial-Up Networking window, and right click on the Serial Network icon. In the resulting menu click on Properties.

TCP/IP Settings Screenshot Link 7) In the resulting window, click on the Server Types tab and uncheck all the tick boxes apart from the TCP/IP box.

Now click on the TCP/IP Settings... button.

8) In the resulting window, fill out the boxes as follows:

Tick the Specify an IP address tick box, and in the space below, labelled IP address, type in 192.168.1.2.

Tick the Specify name server addresses tick box, and in the space below, called Primary DNS, type in
192.168.1.1
.

Now click on the OK button, to return to the last window.

Uncheck the tick box labelled: Use area code and Dialing Properties.

Click on OK.


10) The configuration is now complete.
