(This guide is based on Windows 98
(Second Edition) behaviour, so it might vary from other
versions of Windows 95/98. However, the overall process
should be more or less the same.)

1) Open
up the Control Panel, and double click
on Network. |
|

2) A
window should appear labelled Network,
with 3 tabs on it:
(i) Configuration
(ii)
Identification
(iii) Access
Control |

3) The
first section we are concerned with is
Configuration. There should be a list of all
the installed network components on your computer.
Check to see if there is an entry labelled
TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter.
If there is then proceed to step
5,
otherwise proceed to step 4.

4a) In the
list check to see if there is a line labelled:
Dial-Up Adapter. If there is, skip
to 4b)
otherwise continue.
(i) Click on the tab
marked Add....
(ii) A window marked
Select Network Component Type should
appear. Select Adapter and click on
Add...
(iii) In the resulting
window called Select Network
Adapter, scroll down the
Manufacturer menu and select
Microsoft.
(iv) In the Network
Adapter menu, select Dial-Up
adapter and click on
OK.
(v) Follow the onscreen
instructions. (You may need your Windows CD)
(vi) Once everything is
completed, return to the original Network
window.

b) Now that
we are sure we have a Dial-Up Adapter, we need to
install the TCP/IP protocol to run on it.
(i) Select the
Dial-Up Adapter by clicking on it
once. Click on the tab marked
Add...
(ii) A window marked
Select Network Component Type should
appear. Select Protocol and click on
Add...
(iii) In the resulting
window called Select Network
Protocol, scroll down the
Manufacturer menu and select
Microsoft.
(iv) In the Network
Protocol menu select
TCP/IP, and click on
OK.
(v) Follow the onscreen
instructions. (You may need your Windows CD)
(vi) Once everything is
completed, return to the original Network
window.

5) We now
need to check if there is an entry for Client
for Microsoft Networks, in the list of
installed network components. Windows should
automatically install it when you install the TCP/IP
protocol. If it has proceed to step 7, otherwise continue to step 6. |

6)
(i) Click on the tab marked
Add...
(ii) A window marked
Select Network Component Type should
appear. Select Client and click on
Add...
(iii) In the resulting window
called Select Network Client, scroll
down the Manufacturer menu and select
Microsoft.
(iv) In the Network
Client menu select Client For
Microsoft Networks, and click on
OK.
(v) Follow the onscreen
instructions. (You may need your Windows CD)
(vi) Once everything is
completed, return to the original Network
window. |

7) In the
original Network window click on
File and Print Sharing..., and tick
both boxes.(Again, you may need your Windows CD. Just
follow the onscreen instructions.)
Once everything is completed, return to the
original Network window.

8) Select
the entry for TCP/IP -> Dial-Up
Adapter in the Network window, and
click on Properties. |

9) Ignore
the warning message, and in the resulting window called
TCP/IP properties click on the
Gateway tab. |

10) Under
the label New Gateway, type in the
IP address for your Acorn, in this case
192.168.1.1, click on
Add. The IP address should appear in
the Installed Gateways list.
Now click on OK, at the bottom of
the screen and follow the on-screen instructions. You
may have to reboot the computer.
Once everything is completed, return to the
original Network window.

11) In the
original Network window, click on the
Identification tab and fill out the
window as follows:
Computer name:
novapc
Workgroup: Workgroup1
If you already have your own names for these, then
it is not necessary to change them. But remember, the
computer names must remain consistent for all
configuration guides on this website.
Click on OK, and follow any
on-screen messages. You may have to reboot.
