(This guide is based on Windows 98 (Second Edition) behaviour, so it might vary from other versions of Windows 95/98. However, the overall process should be more or less the same.)

1) Open up the Control Panel, and double click on Network.

2) A window should appear labelled Network, with 3 tabs on it:
(i) Configuration
(ii) Identification
(iii) Access Control

Network Component List Link 3) The first section we are concerned with is Configuration. There should be a list of all the installed network components on your computer. Check to see if there is an entry labelled TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter.

If there is then proceed to step 5, otherwise proceed to step 4.

4a) In the list check to see if there is a line labelled: Dial-Up Adapter. If there is, skip to 4b) otherwise continue.

(i) Click on the tab marked Add....
(ii) A window marked Select Network Component Type should appear. Select Adapter and click on Add...
(iii) In the resulting window called Select Network Adapter, scroll down the Manufacturer menu and select Microsoft.
(iv) In the Network Adapter menu, select Dial-Up adapter and click on OK.
(v) Follow the onscreen instructions. (You may need your Windows CD)
(vi) Once everything is completed, return to the original Network window.

b) Now that we are sure we have a Dial-Up Adapter, we need to install the TCP/IP protocol to run on it.

(i) Select the Dial-Up Adapter by clicking on it once. Click on the tab marked Add...
(ii) A window marked Select Network Component Type should appear. Select Protocol and click on Add...
(iii) In the resulting window called Select Network Protocol, scroll down the Manufacturer menu and select Microsoft.
(iv) In the Network Protocol menu select TCP/IP, and click on OK.
(v) Follow the onscreen instructions. (You may need your Windows CD)
(vi) Once everything is completed, return to the original Network window.

5) We now need to check if there is an entry for Client for Microsoft Networks, in the list of installed network components. Windows should automatically install it when you install the TCP/IP protocol. If it has proceed to step 7, otherwise continue to step 6.

Adding a Network Client Link 6)
(i) Click on the tab marked Add...
(ii) A window marked Select Network Component Type should appear. Select Client and click on Add...
(iii) In the resulting window called Select Network Client, scroll down the Manufacturer menu and select Microsoft.
(iv) In the Network Client menu select Client For Microsoft Networks, and click on OK.
(v) Follow the onscreen instructions. (You may need your Windows CD)
(vi) Once everything is completed, return to the original Network window.

Enabling File and Print Sharing Screenshot Link 7) In the original Network window click on File and Print Sharing..., and tick both boxes.(Again, you may need your Windows CD. Just follow the onscreen instructions.)

Once everything is completed, return to the original Network window.

8) Select the entry for TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter in the Network window, and click on Properties.

9) Ignore the warning message, and in the resulting window called TCP/IP properties click on the Gateway tab.

PC Gateway Screenshot Link 10) Under the label New Gateway, type in the IP address for your Acorn, in this case 192.168.1.1, click on Add. The IP address should appear in the Installed Gateways list.

Now click on OK, at the bottom of the screen and follow the on-screen instructions. You may have to reboot the computer.

Once everything is completed, return to the original Network window.

PC Identification Screenshot Link 11) In the original Network window, click on the Identification tab and fill out the window as follows:

Computer name: novapc
Workgroup: Workgroup1

If you already have your own names for these, then it is not necessary to change them. But remember, the computer names must remain consistent for all configuration guides on this website.

Click on OK, and follow any on-screen messages. You may have to reboot.
