Disclaimer: This method is not an officially recognised method of network protection and has not, therefore, been rigorously tested or verified. I cannot guarantee that your PC's shared drives will be totally secure from hackers. If network security is a priority for you, then I would recommend installing a firewall on your Windows box or connect to the internet via a secure computer (ie. a Linux box).

This following guide is for people who connect to the internet with their Windows PC, using a modem. If you connect to the internet via a LAN then this is not applicable.

This guide will assume that you have followed all of the instructions for setting up the PC networking, and is therefore concerned with the alterations and additions that will need to be made. NB. All your Internet connections must be installed before setting up the second Dial-Up Adapter.

Alterations:

1) Disabling File and Print Sharing On The Original DUA.

This is the DUA that you will use to connect to the internet.

DUA Screenshot 1 a) Open up the Control Panel, and double click on Network. A window labelled Network should appear.
b) There should be a list of all installed network components on your computer. Select the entry labelled TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter, and click on the Properties button situated underneath the list.

DUA Screenshot 2 c) Ignore the warning message, and in the resulting window called TCP/IP properties click on the Bindings tab. Deselect both of the tick boxes: Client For Microsoft Networks and File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks. Click on OK.

d) You will then be warned by Windows that your have not selected any drivers to bind with, and it will ask if you would select one. Click on the No button. Follow any onscreen instructions.

2) Removing Your Current Serial Network Connection.

DUA Screenshot 3 a) On the PC desktop double click on the My Computer icon, and in the resulting window double click on Control Panel.
b) Double click on the Dial-Up Networking icon to get the Dial-Up Networking window.
c) Highlight the Serial Network icon by right clicking on it, and select Delete on the resulting menu.

Additions

1) Installing The Second Dial-Up Adapter

a) Open up the Control Panel, and double click on Network. A window labelled Network should appear.
b) There should be a list of all installed network components on your computer. Click on the Add... button situated underneath the list.

DUA Screenshot 124 c) A window marked Select Network Component Type should appear. Select Adapter and click on Add...

DUA Screenshot 5 d) In the resulting window called Select Network Adapter, scroll down the Manufacturer menu and select Microsoft.
e) In the Network Adapter menu, select Dial-Up adapter and click on OK.
f) Follow the onscreen instructions. (You may need your Windows CD).

DUA Screenshot 6 g) If you return to Network window, there should be an entry for the second Dial-Up Adapter. In Windows 98SE this is labelled: Dial-Up Adapter #2 (VPN Support). There should be a corresponding entry for TCP/IP: TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter (VPN Support).

Check the Bindings section of the TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter (VPN Support) Properties, to ensure that Client For Microsoft Networks and File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks are enabled.

2) Setting Up Your New Serial Network Connection.

a) On the PC desktop double click on the My Computer icon, and in the resulting window double click on Control Panel.
DUA Screenshot 7 b) Double click on the Dial-Up Networking icon to get the Dial-Up Networking window.

Click on the Finish button to complete the process.

f) We now need to set up the network settings for the Dial-Up Connection.Return to the Dial-Up Networking window, and right click on the Serial Network icon. In the resulting menu click on Properties.

DUA Screenshot 11 g) In the resulting window, click on the Server Types tab and uncheck all the tick boxes apart from the TCP/IP box.
